If you are interested in taking time out or wanting to gain some social experience before starting your studies, doing voluntary work is a good option. South Africa is a great Gap year destination. We offer a wide variety of projects running from 2 weeks to 12 months and ranging from social, sport to conservation.
We will have a project to suit your interest. Most of our projects are in Western Cape and Eastern Cape. Due to the nature of our social projects we do prefer applicants with a bit of experience and maturity in their field of interest.

What is a volunteer?

Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity, intended to promote good or improve human quality of life, but people also volunteer for their own skill development, to meet others, to make contacts for possible employment, to have fun, and a variety of other reasons that could be considered self-serving. Volunteerism is the act of selflessly giving your life to something you believe free of pay. Volunteering takes many forms and is performed by a wide range of people.

Visa requirements

Depending on your home country and nationality, an exchange visa must be obtained through the local consular authorities in your home country prior to leaving for South Africa. You have to apply for this permit before entering South Africa. This visa is valid for one year only. The volunteer permit is issued to foreigners who are going to participate in a programme of cultural, economic or social exchange organised or administered by an organ of state.

The following documents are required (please double check with the South African Embassy in your country of origin):
» vaccination certificate, if required
» proof of financial means in the form of:
» bank statements
» cash available, or travellers’ cheques
» medical cover in terms of a South African medical scheme or a recognised medical scheme
» cash deposit of equivalent value of your return ticket to your country of origin or residences
» medical and radiological report
» police clearance of all countries you lived in for 12 months or longer since the age of 18 years
» invitation from the prospective employer

It is advisable to bring a police clearance certificate with you and also make copies of your passport and other important documentation needed. Please make sure that your visa and health insurance is taken care of before entering South Africa. Apply for an international driver’s license as not all foreign licenses are accepted in South Africa. Make sure that you save some extra money for travelling!
